This is the apparition we captured on film on June 6, 2009.It is to the left of the red orb.  This location  is near the time capsule at Thompson Park.  We get very good EVP there, including one that claims to be The Captain.  In this picture, I noticed this apparition seems to be wearing a uniform of some sort, and I thought it was from WWI.  On Monday, I went to the Thompson  Park Council meeting and talked with one of the Council members, who had several stories he told me right there.  When I told him about The Captain, he told me the story of a man, in 1900, who was hired by the park to plant flower beds, and did so all over the park. He worked there for five years.  He was also a veteran of the Civil War.  His nickname was "The Captain".
While it is not proof that there is a ghost there,  it is amazing to find a story that actually helps to validate what we have heard, seen, felt, and discovered.

Dave took this picture a few months back.  He noticed what looks like a horse and rifer on the path, beside the last tree you can see by the trail..   We had discussed this picture but didn't know what to say about it because we hadn't heard anything dealing with a horse and rider about he park.  I thought, like pony express or Civil War or something like that.  But no.
In the 1960's there was a man who rode his horse into the park one night.  The man was drunk and up near the Amphitheater, he rode his horse into a tree.  The horse broke it's neck and died.  A back hoe was brought in, a hole dug right near what was once called the band stand, but is now the Amphitheater, and the horse pushed in.  In other words, a horse is buried in an unmarked grave near the Amphitheater.  That might explain why a horse and rider apparition might be about in the park.  Keep your eyes open.  More info on this story, as well as other new stories coming soon.

Thank You Jonathan Brown

There was an extra element added to our Legends Walk Saturday which helped to make it that much better.  Jonathan Brown is a living historian in the area.  I met him last year at Harvest Days in Beaver Creek State Park.

He also knows my crew member Briana, and before I knew it, he was standing at our walk as it was beginning, not only dressed as a confederate soldier, but had an outfit for our General Morgan top use also!  It was such a nice thing to do!  Thank you so much for your help Jon on Saturday!  You added so much to our walk and it was greatly appreciated!

Remember To Ask A Spirit To Get Into The Picture With You

If you are in an area that you are pretty sure is haunted, sometimes if you ask for any spirits in the area to get into the picture with you, they sometimes do.  I always have my crew put their hands out and I say "If there are any spirits in the area that would like to get into the picture, please come and sit on one of their hands."
This is the result Friday night.  After we were done with all the posters for the Legends walk, we went up into a field by my home where there was once a graveyard.  It was removed some where between 1941(the date on the cemetery marker we found there) and 1950 when my father moved to this area as a young man).  He said there was never one there that he can remember.  But he did hear stories about it.  He said two farmers bought the property.  Half of the cemetery was on each mans property.  They would throw the stones back and forth onto each others section.  Finally the head stones  ended up in the yard of a next door neighbor.  The stones of the cemetery are rumored to have been used to build the foundation for the house that is there today.
EVP is very good here.  We have also seen a shadow person wandering up there.  I was not surprised when we got this picture, though I am always amazed when they do something asked of them.

Alfred Holland Green served as a Union soldier during the American Civil War.
He served with A company in the Pennsylvania 147th, which fought at the battle of
Gettysburg.
Surviving the war, he lived as a veteran until February 11, 1913. Sadly, there was no
Headstone to mark his grave. Nor was there a military marker of any kind.
In the recent past a descendant of the Brown/Green family began researching the
Family genealogy. During that search she came across Alfred Holland Green. Finding
out he was laid to rest at Spring Grove Cemetery, his plot was located, but bare.
Through much hard work and contacts, arrangements were made to place a military
marker on the grave. A small dedication ceremony was given at Spring Grove on
July 17th, 2010. Almost a century after soldier Green was buried.
A few words were spoken in honor of Alfred Holland Green, civil war living historians
offered a  gun salute with loud civil war era rifles, Taps was played by a solo horn
unseen up the hill that cascaded over the ceremony like a warm breeze. The flag was
then presented to the family members of soldier Green by U.S. Military Veterans of the
Tri-State Veterans Burial Group.
A military marker is now in place on the spot where this civil war soldier was laid
to rest in 1913. Alfred Holland Green May 5, 1843 - February 11, 1913.

We had a fantastic turnout for Meet the Legends of Columbiana County!  It was a great reward for all our hard work the last few weeks! These pictures were taken by my crew member Becky.  I was so busy I didn't even get to pick up the camera!  We had one of our characters get stung by a bee 9 times.  Billi Baker had to be taken to the emergency room to be checked out because she was stung so many times.  Her parents said she will be fine.  A bee got trapped under her costume and couldn't get out.
Over 200 people walked the path and viewed our Legends.  I hope they had a great time!  Jaycees went above and beyond to help with everything, even buying two generaters so we could have the fog machines and strobe light for Jake the Nightwatchman.
Special thanks to Alan and Brad, our Bigfoots, for wearing those incrediblely hot suits!  They were soaked with sweat by the end of the evening!
We met a new ghost hunting crew, Hanoverton Parnanormal.  We hope to work with them in the future to investigate Grove Hill Cemetery!
I don't know if we will ever do this again, but I hope so.

In our adventures down on the Back 9 this week we have had a large orb show up twice in pictures.   The first time is the group picture taken on Tuesday.   The second seemed interested in our Esther Hale.  We also got some excellent EVP down in that area last Saturday which I will be sharing next week.  Perhaps the costumes have their attention.  Or the excitement that we all feel when we are down there.  What ever it is, if you believe in this sort of thing, they seem interested in something.  Did I mention I believe?

Dress Rehearsel for MEET THE LEGENDS OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY

These are some of the characters you will see at the ghost walk on Saturday.  Pictured here is Christina Sloan, Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy "Floyd, Jake the Night Watchman, Esther Hale, and General John Hunt Morgan.  Also Gretchen Gill, and The Blue Lady of Thompson Park.  They look great and everything worked out nicely.  Look for us in the Review newspaper on Friday!  At least that is the way we understood it!  They took pictures and interviewed a lot of people!   And all my volunteers were GREAT!  There is no cost for walking the trail on Saturday!  It is all free!  Please come out and have a look at the legends of Columbiana County!  This county has so much to offer and some great history to back it up!

Brooke McKinely(a member of my crew) is Esther Hale!

One of the many legends of Columbiana County is that of Esther Hale.  She was the daughter of a Quaker preacher.  She met a young man, fell in love, and was getting married on Aug 12.  Wearing a beautiful wedding gown, she waited at the alter for her young man, but he never came.  For days afterward, she would be seen walking the streets of Sprucevale, still wearing her wedding gown, looking for her love.  Four months went by and finally no one saw her anymore.  Several members of the town went to her home to check on her and discovered her door banging open and closed in the wind.  When they entered her little house, they found her sitting at her dining room table, surrounded by all the food from her wedding feast.  It was untouched and rotten.  And Esther Hale herself was dead.  She had starved to death.
Now, every August 12 you can find her on the bridge at Gretchen's Lock, the former location of Sprucevale.  But beware.  If she touches you, you will grow and wither and die, while she stays young and beautiful!

Esther is one of the 20 stories we are telling at the Ghost Walk "Meet the Legends of Columbiana County" on July 24 at 7pm.  This event is free.  There will be a donation jar set out and all money collected will be given to Thompson Park!

Rehearsal Night Number 1

These are just a few of the people who have volunteered for the "Meet The Legends Of Columbiana County" ghost walk we are having for the
Ghost Hunters Show on Saturday, July 24.

It starts at 7pm.  We will have it running until 9pm.
Our first rehearsal was to determine where everyone would be, and to get some more costume ideas.  The masks are from the Jaycees basement and may be worn by the shadow people and random ghost you will encounter on the path.   While our main characters MIGHT not bother you, these guys surely will.
We are also getting a coffin, fog machines and a few other surprises, too.  Thank you to the lovely ladies and kind gentlemen who have come out to volunteer their time for this event.

Pop and water will be sold by the Jaycees and a donation jar for the park will be available also.

Our next rehearsal is Thursday night at 7pm.  Anyone interested in being a random ghost or shadow person for this event, please be there at 7.  If you choose a shadow person, where black.  If a ghost, choose a costume of some kind and be ready to be made into a white ghostly form.  (We are using simple baby powder for this effect.)

Our New Banner and Sadie Barker, Too!

This is our new banner!  Dave got it for us and I just love it!  It is amazing and perfect for us!  Briana and my Mom are holding it up.

Briana is dressed as Sadie Barker, the Salineville Witch.  In the mid to late 1800's Sadie was accused of being a witch and several members of the town of Salineville went to her little cabin one night.  They tied her to her bed, locked her dogs in with her and caught her cabin on fire.  As they were burning,  her agonized screams filled the night, accompanied by the howling of her dying dogs.  To this day, people report hearing those screams and howls in the spot where her cabin once stood.

Sadie Barker will be part of the tour on July 24th at Thompson Park.  7pm.  We are being joined by the East Liverpool Jaycees!  It is free and a great family event!  For more info, please see:http://www.thompsonpark.org/

A visit to Lusk Lock and Bowman's Cemetery July 18.

Just a few shots from the Lusk Lock/Bowman Cemetery Tour.  About 15 people came and we had a great time!  The air was heavy but we were able to see everything and EVP and Ghost Box sessions went well.  We told stories and had experiences.  Then it started to get a little stormy.
A rumor  is going around apparently that Bowman's Cemtery  is private property and  no one can go there.  I have been out there twice this week alone and it is not blocked off from the public.  We have been out there on three occassions for a midnight run and also had no problems.  There are not any "NO TRESPASSING" signs anywhere or "Private Property" signs or "Keep Out" signs either.  For now I think it is just a rumor.  If I hear anything of an official basis, I will be sure to pass the information on.  If we as a community take care of that area and respect it, there should be no reason for anyone to block public use of it.  Keep that in mind the next time you go out there and think about knocking down one of the old crosses or pushing over a head stone.  That has not happened in a long time however, so I think the message is getting out to take care of these historic areas.
Someone also asked about the huge crack that is supposed to be at Bowman's.  It is so large, they say you can put your whole arm in it.  THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THAT AT BOWMAN'S.  I HAVE BEEN GOING THERE SINCE 2006, AND I HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT.  If it was there at one time, whoever fixed it did such a good job, you can't even tell where it was.  It does have ghosts and plenty of charm, but no gaping holes anywhere, for sure.
DON'T FORGET THE GHOST HUNTERS SHOW THIS SATURDAY, JULY 24, AT THOMPSON PARK.  IT STARTS AT 4PM FOR GHOST HUNTING CREWS WANTING TO SET UP A TABLE .
THE GHOST WALK, "MEET THE LEGENDS OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY' STARTS AND 7PM AND IS SPONSORED BY THE EAST LIVERPOOL AREA JAYCEES!!!!

Thompson Park Ghost Walk July 17

It was a nice evening at Thompson Park tonight.  Hot.  Muggy.  Successful.  We were joined by Holly (who would be on my crew if she didn't live in Columbus!  When she is up here, we always try to work out a little hunting somewhere.)  Bryan from the Jaycees, and Billi and Jen.
We worked down on the Back 9, starting with the area where Makayla stood the other night.  We had some interesting things happen to us tonight, but because of the walk next Saturday, I am not going to let you hear it until next week.  It was a good night though.  After we worked this little clearing, we went down to the first bridge.  Amazing.  This was a good crew tonight and we had a great time.  You will be hearing the EVP we got this evening, next week.  The Ghost Box sessions were pretty good also.    But we have two EVP sessions that are Class A EVP's, clear and easy to hear.
At one point, Bryan jumped out from behind a tree and scared everyone.  One of the girls said  "Now I believe he is from the Jaycees."

Work On The Legends Walk Continues

This is my crew member, Makayla.  She is standing in a clearing where we plan to put one of our Legends.  I wanted to see what someone would look like there.  Beside her is a really nice orb.  I thought it interesting.
Everything went nicely this evening.   We walked the trail once more, with Brian(a member of the East Liverpool Jaycees) and Paula(an East Liverpool Review employee) in tow.  Brian was busy thinking, a lot.  :)  Visions of a Trail of Terror for Halloween with the Jaycees was dancing through his head.  They hope to get permission from the Thompson Park council to have a haunted trail of terror of some sort here this year.  They have not had a haunted anything since they had to sell their building a few years back.  Now they are searching for a new place to scare people for Halloween.  Thompson park would be perfect.  So many places to scare you with!
We still need a few more volunteers, though most of the characters are filled.  We still need Shadow People, Random Ghosts, and a few of the male characters remain open.  We also still need someone to play Lucy Cobb.  The roles are not hard.  Ghosts do not talk.  Most of their stories are on paper.  We will be sending small groups down, about 6 at a time.  Larger groups may want a guide.
There is no charge to come to this event.  There will be a donation jar set up so you can help out the park and Jaycees if you want.
Any questions?  Email me.  ghosting12@yahoo.com

Interested in Volunteering for the Legends Walk at Thompson Park?

This is a picture of the Big Rock at Thompson Park.  It is also the place where the Blue Lady has been sighted the most.  I have it on good authority that she will be there on July 24.
While I have a volunteer for her, I am in need of about 30 people to help out on the trail, either as a character, a shadow person, or a random ghost.  If you are interested in helping on the trail, please let me know.  There will be a meeting this Friday at 7pm at Thompson Park for anyone wanting to lend a hand.
Refer to an earlier article to see some of the characters we are looking for.  So far I have:
Gretchen Gill
Esther Hale
Mr. Floyd
and
The Blue Lady
characters covered for volunteers.   There are no lines to memorize because ghosts don't talk much.  The characters are being presented as the ghosts they have become.  There will be at least one dress rehearsal next week in the evening.  If you are interested and have the time, either email me or come to the meeting on Friday.  :)

Answer to a Mystery About the Diamond House

This picture is of East Liverpool 1900.  There are many interesting things about it, like the sight of that huge pottery in the far left.  Or the presence of the Roving Sentinel in the Diamond.  Notice the Diamond House has a Cylinder that runs up the side.   It has a top, giving the building an extra touch of elegance.

At some point, the top disappears from pictures.

This is what it looks like today.  The top of the Cylinder is missing and changes the whole look of the building.  At the Jaycees meeting on Sunday, one of the members, Dan, mentioned how the top is just laying up there on the roof of the building.  It was knocked off during one of the fires that ravaged the city and has layed up there ever since.  Mystery solved.  Now, does anyone know what happened to the top of the Civil War Memorial building at Riverview Cemetery?

We passed through little Irondale on our tour of the Yellowcreek area on Sunday.  So many stories out of that tour and I decided to begin with this one!  Teresa and Alan, our guides, told us about this little house that sits by the road and we stopped and looked at it.
The beautiful detail to be found on the outside of this home is never seen anymore.
I can imagine it being made by some gentleman for his lovely new wife.  So much pride went into the many little details around every corner.
As I walked around it and took pictures, Teresa said she heard it may have once been a stagecoach stop.  And here it sits, ever so slowly decaying away.     Part of the inside apparently burned and the owners just didn't have enough money to repair it.  Now it is just a scary old house.  To me it is a beautiful example of an age long gone.  If anyone knows anything about it, please let me know!

THE EAST LIVERPOOL JAYCEES ARE ON BOARD FOR THE GHOST HUNTERS SHOW

I went to a meeting last night for the East Liverpool Jaycees to ask if they had any costumes Ghosting 12 could borrow for our "MEET THE LEGENDS OF COLUMBIANA COUNTY" ghost walk at Thompson Park during the Ghost Hunters Show.  As it turns out they not only have some costumes, but they really want to give us a hand!  I am so excited about getting their help!  I also learned last night that they are about a lot more than Haunted Houses.  They are all about helping their community in any way they can. They bought the old Cookies Kitchen building and are completely renovating it.

Please try to come to the July 24 Ghost Hunters Show.  If you are a ghost hunting group and want to set up, please come at around 4pm to start.

More info to come in the next few hours, most likely.

Just Wondering....

If you are a member of my crew and you check this blog, please email me and let me know how often.  I am trying to estimate how many hits on the blog are from crew members on a daily or weekly basis. :)

I took over 50 pictures at Lusks Lock the other day.  Out of all of them, these two have a strange anomaly in them.  I was taking a picture of the creek and in the center it is like something nearly invisible is standing there, in between the view and me.  In the second picture, a similar anomaly is hovering over Will and Briana, only smaller. Click on the pictures to make them larger to see better.  I checked my camera lens and it is clean.  These are the only two pictures that have this on them.

Thursday, July 8, 2010

We made two cemetery stops today on our Lusks Lock Adventure.  I have plastered FaceBook with Lusks Lock so I decided to put Township Line Cemetery on the blog.  We stopped at Bowman's Cemetery too, but everyone has seen that, so I went with the lesser known of the two.
Township Line Cemetery has also been called Madison Township Cemetery (another of this name is down on East Liverpool Road, near  West Point.).  This cemetery is in serious need of attention.  As you can see by the pictures, it is severely overgrown and suffers from several fallen trees.  Many of the stones need repaired.  There are two family plots still intact, complete with a wrought iron fence around each.  The Chess Pieces, as I have called them, are so overgrown you almost can't see them.  Occupied by the March family, they line the back of the cemetery.
We got two really nice EVP here.  One says "I know who you are!"  and it is said in such a way that it seemed like whoever it was suddenly recognized one of us.
This may well be a stop on the tour we are having on July 18 at Lusk Lock and Bowman's Cemetery.  We may stop there on the way back.

On July 3 we went on yet another adventure, like many others, to Gretchen's Lock.  We have been working on a section of a trail behind the Grist Mill we are calling The Virgin Trail.  It was referred to as that during  a ghost walk back in 2008 we had by a man who claimed to be a medium.   The name just stuck. The trail is back far enough to be away from all the popular spots and creepy enough to give us a good time.  It takes us down by the creek and a lot of strange sounds come from all directions in that area.

We also went to visit an old tree way up the trail that fell some years ago.  It very well could have been alive during the time of Sprucevale.  We did several EVP and Ghost Box sessions here, but we are still going over the data for those.
As usual we had a tense, scary and exhilarating adventure.  For all we know, the noises we hear are from Raccoons, coyotes, owls, or some other woodland creature.   But our imaginations are always at the front.  It is a good test of nerve.  We will be returning often to this area to do more research, possibly for a future tour.

This was full of dirt when we visited last.  It is in great shape now.  We walked all the way through the tunnel for the stream.  It was a great adventure!  This is Laurel Hollow Park in Newell.  It was once a zoo that held animals like polar bears and monkeys.  We went in March, taking a lot of pictures, so when we returned on Saturday, I was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of work had been done on the area. The animal den was patched and new cement poured.  The tunnel for the stream was patched back together and we even walked through it.  We found the remains of a couple more enclosures and admired the new flowers planted in the round flower garden.   It was a very pleasant experience.   We also found out where the old fountain that used to be here went.  It belongs where the road above now runs past Homer Laughlin.   Another story to follow about it soon.It is a very pleasant little park to visit and has just enough left from the old days to keep any history buff entertained.  Don't know yet about any ghosts. But we will.

This information was sent in by James Hill, whom I met at the Pottery Festival this year.  He sent me an email last year about it, but it was right before my mom had her stroke in August, and I had put it on the back burner.  In July, Ghosting 12 will be out there investigating the area a lot closer.
There are other stories for this area that I will be adding .  Also, a seperate story about the McCollough Childrens Home will be coming soon.

THE TRIANGLE OF MYSTERY

The triangular isthmus of land at the intersection of St. RT. 213 and St.Rt. 7.
In 1774 Chief Logan’s Family was massacred in this area.

Yellow Creek Massacre
Logan’s friendly relations with white settlers changed with the Yellow Creek Massacre of 30 April 1774. A group of Virginia frontiersmen led by Daniel Greathouse murdered a number of Mingos, among them Logan’s brother, (commonly known as John Petty), and at least two other close female relatives, one of them pregnant and caring for her infant daughter. Her children were fathered by John Gibson a prominent trader in the region. These Mingo had been living near the mouth of Yellow Creek, and had been lured to the cabin of Joshua Baker, a settler and rum trader who lived across the Ohio River from their village. The Natives in Baker’s cabin were all murdered, except for the infant child, who was spared with the intention of giving her to her father. At least two canoes were dispatched from the Yellow Creek village, but they were repelled by Greathouse’s men concealed along the river. In all, approximately a dozen were murdered in the cabin and on the river. Logan was not present in the area when the massacre took place and was summoned to return by runners.  (I was told that the massacre was far more wide spread than just these few people.  It was his whole family.  Aunts, Uncles, brothers, sisters.  Cousins, everyone was massacred.  That was why he said "Who shall mourn?")
1850 The Haunted Old Stone House in Hollow Rock

A spooky tale of lost gold and lost lives.

1914 McCollough Children’s Home Built on the triangle.
Reference Gordon Grafton’s excellent book “Lost Children of the Ohio Valley” on the home and the sorrows associated with it.

1950’s several nurses carpooling to East Liverpool City Hospital were involved in a horrific crash in heavy fog at the intersection of St. Rt. 213 and St. Rt. 7. The pain increased by the fact the on duty nurses had to treat their own friends scheduled as their relief, and help some cross to the other side.
In the mid 90’s the same intersection was the site of another tragedy as a sixteen year old high school girl’s car stalled in the middle of the intersection and was hit broadside by a coal truck, killing her instantly

Perhaps the most bizarre incident occurred in the same time frame, when two men from the Akron Canton area decided to take justice into their own hands and execute an alleged pedophile. After shooting the man at some strip pits they severed his hands, stuffed them in his cowboy boots and threw them into Yellow Creek in this same area.

Finally just a few years ago a young man murdered his own Father as they sat fishing on the banks of Yellow Creek very close to the same area as the previous incident.
Can all of this be coincidence or is this area truly haunted, cursed, or something else.

Thank you James for sending this information in.  If anyone knows any other details about this area please email me!  ghosting12@yahoo.com
One more thing. James also sent me this:
James Hill July 1 at 10:46am Hi Kim,

Just a quick note to let you know, "Tales of Yellow Creek and Stories of Yellow Creek" have been republished and brought out in one book. It was done in conjunction with a walking tour of the area (missed it dang it). It's available at M&M hardware in Steubenville for $20.00. This is an invaluable resource for paranormal investigations in the area. It will give great hints of where to look and what to look for.

Needless to say I will be going to Stubenville soon.

On February 7, 1918, the Adamant Pottery, just up the road from The Crockery City Brewery, was found burning uncontrolled.  Later that morning the grisly remains (pictured above) of two bodies were discovered.   They were missing their heads, arms, and legs.
They would later be identified as David Mumaw, a night watchman about 60 years old.  According to descendants, final identification was only made through a Knights of Pythias medallion worn constantly by watchman Mumaw. The second body was identified as being that of Joseph Cannon, 55, a potter who had been sleeping at the plant for several nights and who proved to be missing after the fire.  A man named Willis Payne  was arrested a few day later for the attempted arson of the Thomas Pottery. It was not at first thought he was involved in the Adamant Fire.  He refused to answer questions about it until the  arrival of Police Chief Hugh McDermott.  From there  the interrogation of Payne took on a more aggressive aspect. At the arraignment before Mayor J.S. Wilson, Payne at first refused to answer any questions put to him. At some point during these proceedings, however, McDermott's Airedale terrier, "Turk", lunged at Payne who, faced with the snarling dog,  immediately confessed to setting two fires.  Upon further questioning it was determined that  "he was not in possession of normal intelligence".  At one point he did claim that another man put him up to starting the fires. Payne said the man was tall and wore a fur coat.   He said he was paid 50 cents to start the Adamant fire by him.  He denied any knowledge of the death of Joseph Cannon, but claimed he did murder David Mumaw by hitting him in the head with a hatchet.  A hatchet was found near Mumaw's body.  He also said he liked to hear people who got trapped in the fire scream.  Charges of arson and murder were filed against Payne.  Fearing that some attempt might be made to lynch him, Payne was sent to the Lisbon jail.  Before he left he told authorities that he intended to burn several other pottery plants, all of which had orders from the government to makes war supplies.  It was concluded that Payne did not work alone and it may well have been a German plot.  Now, I am skimming through this story for it is far more detailed.  You can read the whole thing here under Adamant Fire:
IN the end, Payne was never charged with anything, but was institutionalized in an insane asylum in Lima, Ohio.  The man in the fur coat was never found.  If he was a German spy, he got away with it.  Route 11 runs through the area of the Adamant Pottery now, as well as the walking bridge.  But at one time, it was the site of mystery and intrigue.  The perfect story for a ghost hunter like me!

There was an article in the Morning Journal the other day that said the County Commissioners would not be demolishing the old County Home.  YAY!  Click on the "MORNING JOURNAL ARTICLE" for a link to that story.  Thank you to Stevie Halverstadt for her efforts in saving this beautiful building from our history.

Relics From The Past

Just down the street from the Ikirt House in East Liverpool is the home of Dr. Bartolovich (if that is still who owns it.  I am not sure). His back yard is surrounded by a stone wall.  I was working on the East Liverpool tour and decided to look in the back gate.  Boy did I get an eye full!   At the time, I had no idea where the stone carvings came from, though my first thought was something old and English honestly.  The faces on the wall looked like something you would see on an old castle.  And I wasn't far off!
Those two faces once adorned the entrance to the old Central School that stood for about 80 years across from the Carnegie Library.  It is now the site of the alumni building and the clock tower.   Dr. Bartolovich even has the large stone pillars that stood in front of the school also.  I was delighted to see such large chunks of the school still in one piece and able to be seen, sort of.  Thank you Dr. Bartolovich for saving such wonderful reminders of a building long gone.  They certainly are greatly appreciated by me.

Ghosting 12 Paranormal  was down at Gretchen's Lock for over 12 hours yesterday.  We ate a lot of pizza and hot dogs.  Drank a  lot of water.  Walked the trails more than once.  And that was before dark!

Everyone was wonderful.  We made some new friends and said hello to some old ones.
I had a great crew, including Lindsey, our special guest from the Virginia Chapter of G12.  Briana, another new crew member, worked hard all week at her job to get off early for the evening tour.  Thanks so much Briana!

Will stayed the ENTIRE DAY WITH MIKE AND I.  THAT WAS OVER 12 HOURS!   Dave also got to come tonight.  He works two jobs right now, including being in the Air National Guard out of Pittsburgh.  He brought his night vision camera and has already posted several videos of the evening on our face book page!
Gretchen's Lock is absolutely beautiful right now and is worth the walk back.  The foliage has almost grown completely around it.  When you walk in it is like walking into a cave.

We got to work with our new crew members, Steve and Angel.  They did a great job!  Some of you might recognize them from their many midnight adventures at Gretchen's Lock.  I am grateful that they joined our crew.

I finally got to meet Ranger Todd Metz, which was a pleasure.  The Dustin Huffman Memorial Overlook was cleaned up, clipped, chopped, and sawed to get ready for the Dedication.  And the view is breathtaking.  It was a somber day that I will always remember.  While there was heartache in the air, there was great love too.  You couldn't help but feel it.  If you were lucky  enough to have known Dustin in his life, then you know he practiced a pay it forward life style.  I hope that we, as his friends and family can continue that practice with him in mind.

A Rogers Adventure and Future Midnight Run Site

A future investigation site is this little house.  It is owned by my friend Cassidie and located in Rogers, Ohio.
Mike, Will, Briana, and I checked it out last week to make sure it was safe to go inside.    We are using it for Midnight Run purposes.  I am excited because this place, while small, has several areas inside that offer a good scare and practice for future investigations.  There is an opening in the wall of a back room that we will practice turning our backs on.  We will also be going inside one at a time alone.  Okay in the daytime, but a way different story after dark.  Especially when you know there really are things that go bump in the night.
There is a back room made out of cement block and there are several notes written on the wall.  The one pictured above is signed by Jewel Reed.  She says "For anyone who reads this, I am probably back in jail..."
Of course it lends mystery to the little house, in a sinister sort of way.  Why would she be in jail?  Is there even such a person as Jewel?  Or is it just a prank?  This house will make a great practice place for my crew.  Even better if it is haunted.  We will find out!

On our Platinum investigation Monday night, we were outside looking around and Sammi decided to investigate the little garden area behind the Gazebo.  There is an orb in the upper right corner of this picture.

As she entered the area, this is the next picture I took.  It seems that the orb came down to check Sammi out a little closer.  Is it a spirit?  I don't know.  But it was trackable in the pics.  Personally, I believe this may be something, but that is only my opinion.  Unless it is a curious speck of dust.  There are also those who think it might be a bug.    Sure makes some cool pics though.  Who ever takes care of the garden does a nice job by the way.  It really stands out in these pictures at night.  Looking forward to diving into Wellsville and learning more about it's haunted history!

The new sign for the Dustin Huffman Overlook is in place.  It is a beautiful tribute to an amazing young man who lost his life last year on the cliffs below this sign.  Even at 17, Dustin had made an impact on the world, not just in school or track, but in his whole life.
Saturday is the Dedication for this sign and the overlook's new name.  The sign cost his family $2500 and they could use donations to help them pay for it.  It starts at 2pm and will continue into the night.  Ghosting 12 Paranormal will be leading two tours, called Legends of the Park.  One at 4pm and another at 8pm.  We will also be telling stories about other areas in Columbiana County at 10 pm around a campfire.  Food and drinks will be available.   Please come down and show your support to Dustin's family.

One of the stories I tell at Gretchen's Lock is of a woman named Hannah Huddleston.  She was born in 1825 and died in 1899.  Her stone, located at Clarkson Cemetery, says:
Huddleston
Hannah, wife of
William Huddleston
1825-1899
She owned property on the other side of Beaver Creek at Gretchen's Lock (about 45 acres) and 20 acres directly beside the Grist Mill.  Oh, and she haunts Sprucevale.  I do not know why.

This is the corner of an old foundation across the creek from Gretchen's.  I believe it might have been Hannah's house.  She talks the loudest at what we call Hannah's tree.  She has said her name and repeated a sentence we said.  But she is a mystery I can not figure out.  Why does she haunt the park?  What happened to her husband.  If he is buried beside her, he does not have a marker, and he isn't in the cemetery books.  By the 1870 Census, Hannah is alone and the land is solely in her name.  I am still looking for any info I can find about her.  Maybe she has relatives around here still.  I have often thought of picking up the phone book and just start calling people with her last name.  Maybe she made some kind of impression and is still talked about to this day.  Or maybe there is a picture somewhere of her.  That would be so great to discover!

This is a map of Sprucevale from about 1872.  Hannah is clearly on here, as well as other names.  If you know who might have lived in the house across the creek or anything about Hannah, please email me.  I just wonder why she would haunt the park.  If it is her, that is.  She seemed to live a normal life.  She lived to be 74.  Someone loved her enough to get her a nice grave stone.  Why not her husband?  Why were they not buried together?  Why didn't she remarry?  Was William killed when the Dam broke in 1852?  So many questions?  I am looking for answers.

As I was getting things ready for the Missing Person's Vigil in Wellsville, I ran across this plaque, near the Gazebo.  There are lots of interesting historical facts hidden on little memorials like this.  The memorials themselves are usually hidden, like the one beside the Masonic Temple in East Liverpool or the one in front of the 1st NC Bank in Lisbon, beside the Lisbon Masonic Temple.  Both talk about famous presidents who have been in this area, one of them being George Washington.  Which one? You will have to go look. :)
The owners of this property  told me they moved this plaque into their back yard, enclosed with a fence, and the citizens of Wellsville demanded their memorial returned, which was done, of course.
So as I am standing there reading this plaque, I am more and more excited.  The plaque says:
"Here James A. Garfield, Abraham Lincoln, and Andrew Johnson spoke,  General Lewis Cass, U.S. Secretary Of State was a guest, and General John H. Morgan, CSA "The Raider" was a prisoner of war."
And I am stunned!  I never heard of this place.  The Whitacre House burned down around the 1920's , though I can't remember for sure.  This picture can be found in the River Museum in Wellsville.   The two names that jumped out at me on the plaque was Abraham Lincoln (of course!)  and then Gen. John H. Morgan.  Yet another part of the Morgans Raiders story unfolded  for me  Once he was captured near West Point, he was taken to Wellsville until he could be transported safely to Columbus.  I was overjoyed to discover even more major historical events that occurred in Columbiana County.  What a treasure trove this little county is turning out to be!
Tomorrow I will tell you about the building that now sits on the Whitacre House site.  Rumors about it include one involving Pretty Boy Floyd.

This is the River Museum in Wellsville, Ohio.  I finally got to visit there yesterday and I was so glad I did.  After the Missing Person's Vigil was over, Mike and I went exploring this wonderful old house.  It is open every Sunday over the summer.  All they ask is a donation when you enter (your choice) and to sign their guest book.  Gladly I signed and dropped in a few bucks to the donation jar. This building housed  one thing I have been eager to see since last year!
And there it was!  The battle sword of General John Hunt Morgan!  The sword he actually held in his hand and fought with during the Civil War!  Surrounded by pictures, books, and artifacts from the time, I was enthralled.  I did a story about General Morgan last year.

Had a typo on the schedule on the side.  The tour tonight is for 6pm.  and will be ending in Virgin Territory, so to speak.  It should be interesting.  The fog has been bad down there, at least last night anyway.  Be prepared for mud because we have had so much rain.  DO NOT WEAR SHOES YOU WILL WORRY ABOUT RUINING!  Also, with the high humidity in that area, expect a lot of breath shots, like the one left.  It might be warm out, but in all that moisture, your breath can still come out like this.
Above is Mike, Lindsii (special guest from our new Virginia Chapter!) Sammi, Amber, and Will.  Remember a flashlight, camera, extra batteries, and a digital recorder, if you have one.  Mostly though, be prepared to have a fun adventure!

I spent last week with the McKinley family in Virginia.  What a fantastic time I had.  Judy and Bill were great hosts.  Their daughter graduated from high school  and they had a nice grad party for her on Saturday.  Four days before that, we arrived on Tuesday (G12 crew members Jon, Amber, Brooke, and me.  Occasional G12 special guests April, Lisa, and Briana were also in attendance.)  Besides checking out all the great tourist attractions in Virginia, like Virginia Beach and Williamsburgh, we did a lot of ghost hunting.  Judy has some of her own equipment, much to my delight!  She took us to several haunted sights and we even did a house investigation while down there!  By the time the week was over we were all fast friends.  Pictured above is:
Troy(holding the K2)
Lindsey (sitting, with hoodie on)
Our own Amber
Lisa(brown jacket on, sitting)
Judy(standing,left in gray jacket)
Amanda
Jaimee

Troy, Jaimee, and Judy  are the beginnings of G12 down in
Virginia.  I have made Judy, their Lead Investigator, an administrator on our facebook page so she can keep us updated on their hopefully many adventures!  We look forward to getting together with them again to ghost hunt often!  You will get a better chance to meet Judy possibly in August when they come up here to visit.

My trip to Virginia  has been wonderful so far.  This is day three and I have been to several places ghost hunting.  The crypt to the right is found in a small grave yard in Williamsburg.  We walked around for several hours there and I took 300 pictures.
We also went to a small grave yard that has the remains of a church on it in Surry, Virginia,  that was built in 1639.   It was burned down in 1868.  We did several EVP sessions there and the coolest things happened!  As I was looking at my digital recorder, the words SEE YOU came across the lower part of the screen.  As far as I know the only word to come across that is HOLD.  Yesterday we went to a place where a small battle occurred during the Civil War.  There are many places like it in the area.  It isn't marked, nor is a memorial.  It is just a place the locals know about.  I lost one of my recorders in that area, so I am going back today to try and find it.  But, EVP here is great!  It is so loud!   I was not expecting it.  We talked to someone named Anna Currey and Jeff Martin. Anna's name we got from an EVP session.  Jeff's name we got from the Ghost Radar application you can get on your cell phone!  We have been combining the Ghost Radar application and EVP sessions for some interesting results.  I would say at this point that Virginia just might be more haunted than Ohio.  Maybe.  :)

Finished the video for Georgetown Cemetery, finally. Take special note of the back ground music. Ghosting 12 crew members did it on the Haunted Piano during the Locker Room Building investigation a few weeks ago. I loved it. Hope you like it, too.

The walk back to Lock #39 turned out to be quite an adventure.  This walk is not one to take this late in spring because much of what you want to see is overgrown by nature, as you can tell.  Several of the adventurers were also attacked by a plant called nettles.  Bugs were everywhere. There were fallen trees in several places along the trail.   And the heat was balmy.
But reaching Jake's Lock was so worth it!  The beauty that surrounds this mysterious lock is well worth the considerable effort to get there.  Some people just didn't make it.  They turned around and went back.  But many did and were rewarded with some great EVP at the lock and a good ghost box session too.  Some of the answers we got included "call me Jake."  and when we asked how he died, he said "lightening."  two different times.   We trudged through mud, rough terrain, water, high weeds, over fallen trees, and pretty much sweating our asses off, but any adventure is worth some sweat!  This one sure was!

I spent some time finding out exactly what you have to do to get permission to be at Gretchen's Lock, as well as other parts of Beaver Creek State Park, after dark.  I asked a few questions and Todd Metz, Asst. Park Manager, was kind enough to get back to me about it.  The following is the email I sent and his response.

From: Kim M [mailto:ghosting12@yahoo.com]

Subject: Re: Beaver Creek Tours

Thank you Mr. Metz. I appreciate that you took the time to send this. I have been trying since March to contact someone about it with no success and my busy season is here now so I had to do something. On May 8 when my first Gretchen's Tour was held, Park Rangers went down and locked the gates to the park an hour before it started. When that happened I assumed it was because I was having an event down there and didn't have any one's permission to do it. Only I couldn't get a hold of anyone to get it.
There is also some confusion as to the rules about being in the park after dark. I would like to post the correct information on my blog so there are no misunderstandings.

1. Do you have to have written permission to be in the park after dark?
2. As long as you do not drive your vehicle inside the park, but walk, you can go in anytime, no permission necessary? Is that true?
3. Does the written permission include The Pioneer Village area of Beaver Creek State Park as well?

There are a lot of people going down there on a nightly basis and any information I can get out there will help to keep the area safe and organized.
Thank you again for your time.
Kindest Regards,
Kimberly Mitchell
Ghosting 12 Paranormal

Now, here is his response.

You do have to have written permission for be in the park after hours.
If you park outside the gate, you are less likely to be asked to leave or have the chance of your vehicle being locked in.
The written permission does include the pioneer village.
Please keep this in mind: The rangers at anytime reserve the right to ask anyone to leave at anytime for any reason if they feel it necessary. This is even the case if you have the after hours form.
If you have anymore questions, please contact me.

Thanks.

First, I hate putting things on my blog and claiming they are something.  I have certain things on here that I won't even argue about which I feel have something paranormal about them, and you will find them at the bottom of the blog.  (Keep scrolling.  You will find them eventually.)
It is very rare to really get something.  In the picture above, you see a cemetery stone, and this is not what I am debating.  It is the double image of it, above it.  Within that image you see the face of a man.  This is something that happens a lot in cemeteries, and is also one of the reasons I don't listen to what other so called authorities give you as an explanation.  (dust, or bugs, blah blah blah)
I have thrown out pictures similar to this because,  I reasoned,  it is matrixing or just a double image.  But the face looking back has always been different.  Ladies have longer hair.  Men have shorter.  Sometimes it is a profile, while others are staring you full in the face.   The 4 Ghosts picture below is a perfect example of why I look everything over carefully and consider everything I see just as carefully.  I wish I had back some of the things I got rid of listening to what others believe instead of studying it for myself.  I will never make that mistake again.  Is that an apparition in the picture above?  I don't know. I am not going to say it is for that reason.  But, I am also not going to tell you it isn't.

G12 is having a blast on our midnight adventures.  My friend Holly told me about a cemetery near her sister, Karena's house.  She lives in Georgetown, Pa, very close to Hookstown.  So, Friday night, after my CCFHV meeting, Amber, Brooke, Briana, and I went on another Midnight adventure.  We were so glad we did! We captured an excellent EVP that said "GO HOME!"   It came over the Ghost Box, before we even got started.  I was working with another recorder to get it started when those two haunting words came out of the radio.  Expect a video about it soon!  Besides Holly and Karena, we were joined by Kylie, Alexiss, and Amber, who told us an interesting story about this cemetery.
Years ago, there was a woman that everyone thought practiced the black arts. She was labeled a witch.  The townspeople attempted to hang her from a tree once located in the cemetery, but, according to the story, the tree broke and the witch got away.  Now, every Halloween, she returns to Georgetown Cemetery.  This is a legend we are working on finding more information about.  If you have heard this story, please let me know!  We are planning a daytime exploration here in the near future because there were things we couldn't see, like signature rock. Definitely a must see attraction for this fine old cemetery. It is located on a hill and accompanied by something of a high cliff, so we opted to view it when we had a lower risk of getting killed. No need to add our ghosts to the area. It has enough.

In your quest to find a ghost, never limit yourself.  Try anything that comes to mind because you never know what is going to work.  Here you see a square drawn in the dust on Amber's van.  We asked if any spirits in the area were around to please put a mark in the square.  While we didn't get anything, we plan on trying this several times during our adventures this summer.  Something like using baby powder on the floor to catch footsteps from a ghost.  You will be the first to know if we get anything!

We had a nice turnout for Thompson Park tonight, despite the rain. Our adventure took us around the circle almost as usual.  The plan was to stick to the areas with a roof, though we didn't need to. Pictures didn't yield much, except a lot of fog, but we got a few.  Ghost Box and EVP sessions also got us some interesting results and the grumpy guy by the tennis courts cussed at us also.  His favorite swear words include Ass Hole, Bitch, and the F Bomb.  I wonder if he dated a girl that played tennis a lot and haunts that area to see her from time to time.
Thank you to everyone who came tonight.  I hope you left with a new wonder and amazement at the possibilities out there.  I always do.  The next Thompson Park Walk is June 26 at 7 pm.  Hope to see you there!!!

Thursday, May 20, 2010

On our investigation of a building in East Liverpool on May 15, Jen captured this picture of Sarah.  We had done a photo session where we ask any spirits in the room to sit on our hands.  One did on Sarah's.  Is this proof that a spirit was there?  NO.  Just another possibility in the paranormal world.  Good work Jen and Sarah!
I do not hide my opinions on the relativity of orbs with spirit activity. In a field that we know so little about, and in fact is rarely seriously taken,  we can't afford to dismiss any evidence, nor assume anything.  While the orb in Sarah's hand might be dust, why would it be there like we asked, sitting perfectly in her hand?  Ghosting 12 Paranormal will keep searching for answers.

Because G12 has such a large tour schedule this year and our investigations have doubled, it became necessary to increase the size of our crew.  Above left is Alex (far left) and Jen (green shirt) along with our Sammi and Will. At right is Becky.
They bring our crew size to 16. Alex is 15 and is joining our Junior G12 crew.  Jen and Becky have been coming to every ghost walk or tour we have had since early last year.  I met Jen at Thompson Park.  She likes many aspects of ghost hunting and we are looking forward to finding her strengths in the field.
Becky is already starting to shine in research alone.  Knowing the history and legends of an area is one of the most important aspects of being a ghost hunter.  Her field talents are also yet to be discovered, but knowing what ghosts to look for is half the battle.

Last night's investigation of the old house on Wood Street was a calm, uneventful, experience. My crew for this investigation was Mike, Dave, Jon, Becky, and Will.  They did a great job!  We  did several EVP sessions as well as Ghost Box Sessions.  All was quiet.  The Ghost Box did spit out some names, like Tim and Joyce, but for the most part was quiet.  No strange noises or knocks on the walls or floors.  No opening or closing doors.   Just a house that is roughly 110 years old that at one time was a beautiful place to live.

While it looks to be a spooky, and haunted old house now, the fact that it is uninhabited and been that way for 12 years,  may be a factor as to why we didn't seem to find anything.  Of course, as with everything in the paranormal, this is only a theory.   We have a few more recordings to listen to and video to go over to be sure, but right now, not haunted.  It is simply a tired old house that is due to be torn down later this year.

Amber came to my house last night and said Brooke, Brianna,  and she was headed to Bowman's Cemetery and wondered if I would like to go.  "Hell yes!" I said.  I am always up for a ghost hunting adventure.

It was quiet.  It was calm.  It was unnerving!  Every sound coming from the woods was the witch coming for us!  At one point, it sounded like some one running through the woods.  In true Ghost Hunters fashion we charged toward the commotion and found nothing.

We used a night vision camera to take some pictures.  Had fun with that.  Pics turned out good, too.

We also did several Ghost Box sessions.  They are in line with the sessions from The Family Repeat Building.  If you ever get a chance to take off some evening and ghost hunt all night (we went until 4am.) don't pass it up.  It was really worth it.

My friend, Nettie, has been doing research on her own about orbs and ghosts.  Her efforts to get an orb in a picture with her sometimes pay off.  Is this proof that that orb represents a spirit? No.  But it is a way cool picture.  And it is a start.

There is a section of Road outside of Wellsville.  Amy and I were out there yesterday.  While Route 7 is now a nice, 4 lane highway, at one time it was this road seen here.  As we traveled down it, I couldn't help but feel like I was in some Scifi movie where mankind had been wiped out and this is all that remained.

Along the road, not only is the curb still on one side, but this cement wall is on the other.   And stairs.  Stairs that once lead to homes and businesses.  These places were destroyed when the highway was put in. Except for what you see.

At the base of the stairs is a little cement room, with a window.  I have no idea what these rooms are for.  Storage, perhaps.  There are several of them.

This tunnel runs under the railroad tracks.  Part of the highway that once ran through here and is now a ghostly remainder of another time and place that no longer exists.

Where Amy is standing is where the road ends.  There used to be a bridge there.  This is a party place now.  A place to go fishing.  It is Yellow Creek.  A lot of trucks pulling motorcycles drove past us, making their way to hill climbing fun.
In front of the truck, under the bridge, it is rumored that some one committed suicide a few years ago.  We did a ghost box session here and some one said "They took my gun."

Somewhere around here was a bar called Waterford Downs.  The body of a young woman was found behind it in around 1954.  She was never identified and her killer never caught.  In a ghost box session, someone named Mary talked to us.  We also kept hearing "Find me."
I look forward to getting my whole crew down here some Saturday this summer to explore and investigate this area further.
If you know any stories about old route 7, or Waterford Downs, or know anything about the tales I mentioned, please let me know.

More info on The Three Witches From Angel and Steve

I recieved an email from Angel and Steve along with this picture.

Here are a few pics of the (supposed to be)Witches graves , here is a site that has not much about it , and has other haunted areas on there as well ..http://www.ohioexploration.com/columbianacounty.htm.. scroll down to New Springfield
..this is what it says ..German Witches Graves - Just off of Lipply Road, there's a hayfield with a clump of trees in the center. Three tombstones in this clump of trees are said to belong to witches. All three graves are written in German. Ghostly figures have been spotted in the trees, as well as the field. The three witches still haunt the area as well.
So, I am looking for stories about this area if anyone has any.

Three Witches

Somewhere in the Columbiana area, possibly toward North Lima, there is apparently a road.  On that road is a field.  And in that field, all by themselves are three graves.  They are written in German, so no one is sure exactly what they say.  It is rumored to be the graves of three witches.  Does anyone know what I am talking about? I heard this story from Angel and Steve, two of my newest Ghost Hunting friends.  They have been to the site and can verify that the graves are there, and written in German. An older gentleman stopped and told them the stories were not true.    If you know any history about this area or heard the tale, please let me know.  ghosting12@yahoo.com

It was cold and windy and rainy.  But it was still a great time.  As always, Gretchen's Lock never fails to amaze.  Karyn even got an EVP that proclaimed "I'm Gretchen."
We toured Jakes Lock, #42 which is also called Hambltons Lock.  The left side caved in over the winter.

Karyn told everyone about the first time she had gotten an EVP at Gretchen's and the spot where she got it.
We did a few Ghost Box sessions. Nothing great so far to report there,, but we are still going over the data. Also, the Grist Mill is flooded pretty badly.  The water outlet on the lower side is blocked and there is nowhere for the water to go.  It will have to be dug out.
Thank you Columbiana County Paranormal Truth Seekers for coming along on this adventure.  You guys have a great crew and Ghosting 12 loved working with you!   We hope for an opportunity to do so again!

So far, Gretchen's Lock Adventure is still on!

Weather is sometimes hard to deal with when ghost hunting outside, but it is also worth your time to try it in different weather conditions.  Necessity is the mother of invention.  Or discovery.  Wind and rain are not the best conditions to look for ghosts, but you never know what a ghost might be able to do with that either.  Unless you try, of course.  I will keep this updated through out the day.  Basically, if it is raining pretty good and storming (lightening etc)  we will have no choice but to cancel.   I will let you know!

As I drove along Birch Road the other day, working on the ghost story I had heard about, I saw this house and literally had to slam on my brakes and take a picture of it.  It is obviously an old house.  Some of the windows even look original.  It seemed to just jump out at me.  I took this picture and added it to our facebook group page.  We are having a contest on who can find the scariest house in Columbiana County.
A comment (thanks Wendy!)  was made about the house being haunted.
"This house is very haunted! A friend of mine use to live in it & we heard it was involved in the Underground Railroad to get slaves from the river out into the country to escape to Canada. I use to get cold goosebups there all the time & I could hear little kids playing in the yard at all hours of the night."
Underground Railroad stories always have my attention!  There is a bend in the road right by this house that is flanked by an open field.  I wondered if this was where the stagecoach accident might have occured.  Coupled with a historic and possibly haunted house, this area has interesting investigative possibilities!

A TOUR OF GRETCHEN'S LOCK.wmv

The first Gretchen's Lock Adventure is May 8 at 6pm. As long as it is not pouring down rain, it will go on as scheduled. Bring a camera and flashlight. If you have a digital recorder, please bring that also. We will be doing EVP and Ghost Box Sessions in several areas of the park. Oh, and from what I hear, it will be chilly, so dress warm. It gets extra cold down there. This tour usually lasts about 3 hours.

The fourth part to the Voices of Memory In Spring Grove series. It is my favorite. We captured some interesting answers using the Ghost Box. There are other stories about Spring Grove, but they are still a work in progress.

This is the third of 4 videos including results from our ghost box sessions.  There will be more as I uncover more stories about Spring Grove Cemetery.
I have written about the Taylor Murders on here before.  While that case is solved, the young girl with Wooten, the convicted murderer, was never found.  Louise Davis remains missing to this day.

Amber ran across a ghost story about Birch Road.  It runs from Rt 7 to Bell School Road.  Apparently, on one of the bends in this road, if you stand there at midnight, you will be able to hear the thundering of a stagecoach.  She was told this road was part of the stagecoach line that ran from Rogersville(now just Rogers) to East Liverpool.  One late evening, the horses pulling the stagecoach were spooked and they ran off the road, causing the stagecoach to crash.  The driver and both occupants were killed.  Do they haunt the road?  Is this something that might be residual in nature?  This is one of the stories Ghosting 12 Paranormal hopes to investigate this summer.
If you have heard this story before or have any details to add or subtract, let me know.

The Carnival Girl was murdered in about 1942.  She was strangled.  Her body was found not long after death, wrapped in two cheap blankets, laying along an old road down on State Street, in the East End of East Liverpool.  Her identity has never been discovered.  She was buried in an unmarked grave in Spring Grove.  Sadly, her killer was never found.  Click on the link to get the results of our Ghost Box session done near her grave.

Amber, Brooke and I went to Spring Grove Cemtery a few nights ago.  We explored the area in an attempt to prepare a tour for it.  Only half of the cemetery is officially taken care of, through Liverpool Township.  The other half, the front part, only gets attention when there are volunteers to do it.
One of the main things they need is to have the rest of the road running through it chip and sealed.  To that end my crew and I are preparing a tour of Spring Grove filled with the history, lore and legend of East Liverpool and this cemetery.  A cost is yet to be determined at this time, as is a date.  Our goal is to help get the money necessary to finish the chip and seal job.  The video is the first of 4 videos being made from our midnight adventure.  Hope you like it.

GHOSTING 12 WEB SITE INFO
FIND A GRAVE
Medal of Honor, Home of Heroes, Joseph Davis, Boatman Cemetery

Here are three sites Dave found that gave some info on Boatman Cemetery.  It is nice to see someone took an interest in this area that is a keeper of our history.  I am eager to get  inside and check the place out.  I have recieved one email from a person who says this cemetery creeps them out.  I am looking for any ghost stories about the area.  Legends, stories about the occupants, or the efforts to save it would also be appreciated.

I am very interested in The Historical Boatman Cemetery.  Does anyone have any history or stories about it?
Let me know.

This beautiful old bridge can be found next to Route 7, going toward Rogers, Ohio.  Thanks to Amber, once again, who knew about it's existance, I was able to have a look at it today.  It has got to be over 100years old.  I crawled all over it, looking for a date or an indication of what road it used to be.  There is the faint remains of some traveled path way above, but it has not been used in years.  Lots of years.  The cut stone reminds me of the locks down at Beaver Creek.  If any one knows anything about this bridge, please email me!

Sammi, Sarah, and Will all jumped in and helped with the Ghost Walk Saturday!  Sammi talked about haunted bridges.  Sarah's topic was Bigfoot and even gave us an example of a Bigfoot call.  Way to go Sarah!  Will talked about The Blue Lady at the Big Rock.  They all did a great job and I look for them to be jumping in a lot more this year on some of our other tours!

We beat the rain!  We walked all the way around the park, did several ghost box sessions, visited the pool house and the big rock, came back to base camp, took down the tent, and was headed for our cars when the rain started!  WE ARE GOOD!
And we had great success with our Ghost Box sessions!  It was awesome!  We are still going over the recordings, just listening to them last night was enough to tell us we were not alone on our adventure!  Look for them to make their way on here somewhere soon!

Voices From Grimms Bridge.wmv

Here is a video of our Grimms Bridge adventure on April 18. We had a lot of luck with the Ghost Box and EVP also.

Friday, April 23, 2010

A cemetery is not just a place to bury our dead.  It is also a keeper of our history.  The residents of any cemetery are evidence that their time and life existed.  It demands respect and care.  And it should be shared.
Spring Grove Cemetery holds much of East Liverpool's memories and historical facts.  Not to mention her secrets many might want left forgotten.  The triple murders in East Liverpool numbered two in the seventies.  On July 30, 1973, Linda Morris and her 4 year old daughter, Angela, walked into The National Furniture Store on Dresden Avenue during lunch.  At 12:55pm their bodies were discovered.  Linda was lying on an old bed mattress and Angela close beside her.  Angela was still alive at the time and rushed to East Liverpool Hospital, where she died an hour later.  They were beaten to death with a tool of some kind.  Hammer.  Wrench.  Linda was 4 months pregnant at the time.  Mr. Earl Tweed, the owner of the store, was stabbed 27 times, his uneaten sandwhich still sitting on the counter where he was making it.(He is buried in Riverview Cemetery)  Their murderer was never caught.
Deborah Taylor was beaten to death on June 25, 1979 by Robert Wooten.  Her two little children, ages 4 and 6 years old, woke up during her murder.  Robert also beat them to death.  He will be in prison for the rest of his life.
Both of these women and their children are now laid to  rest in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Another interesting grave is that of William Devon.  He died in 1996 while still the Mayor of East Liverpool.  The Diamond, also known at Devon's Diamond, is named after him.  His grave has his picture and accounts many years of his life as a policeman, councilman, and Mayor.  He was such  a huge  part of our community.
He, like the others mentioned in this article, deserve to be remembered.  Not just a name on a stone, as so many are.  What happened to them in their life and death made a difference in this community.  These deaths, in one way or another, changed things.  Some of them, hauntingly so.
I am working on a Ghost Walk through Spring Grove Cemetery that will tell the stories of these and other people who touched our lives over this last century.  This is a charity event.  A cost has not yet been determined, nor has a date, but ALL MONEY WILL GO TO SPRING GROVE CEMETERY TO HELP TAKE CARE OF IT.   One concern is to chip and seal the rest of the road that goes through it.  Half was done (the half taken care of by Liverpool Township) and half wasn't, because, technically, no one takes care of it except volunteers. (who should be commended!!!!  for their efforts and time they freely give.)
More info will follow about this event as it developes.

 Lock 30 Woodlands
The above link will take you to the web site for this out in the middle of nowhere camp area.  I had never been there before, but then, I was never as interested in history as I am now either.
Located on the property of this camp ground are two items I am in love with.  First is Lock #30 of the Sandy and Beaver Canal system.  It is pictured above.  According to the former owners, this lock was never finished, though the history books suggest  a slightly different reason for it's state of disrepair.  The Canal builders did run out of money while building the locks, that is true.  The canal system was started in 1828, but by 1838, they had spent over a million dollars and ran out of money to finish.  The project sat idle for a few years until around 1840, when they got money from the Government to finish.  However, they could not afford to build them like before.  So, for example, Lusks Lock is quite beautiful and has something on it called a facing.  In contrast, Greys Lock did not recieve the facing and looks unfinished, when in fact it was.  Just no facing.  I thought there had been two different engineers for the project and that explained the different looks for the canals.  The canals were finally finished in 1848, but only ran for four years. The end came in the spring of 1852 when the Cold Run Reservoir Dam broke just outside of New Lisbon causing extensive property damage as well as ruining a large section of the canal. The canal company went broke trying to settle the resulting lawsuits.
The old bell sitting in the stone structure is, for now, a mystery.  It was on the property when the current owners bought it.  So far, I have not been able to track down any history for it, nor where it might have been used.  But I am still looking.  This bell greets you as you enter the camp ground.
Ghosting 12 Paranormal will be at Lock 30 Woodlands on Aug 14 for the evening, telling ghost stories about the area around a camp fire.  I am so looking forward to that.  We might even work in a tour of Lusks Lock and Bowman's Cemetery......

Cold.  Cool.  Awesome!   That describes our adventure at Grimms Bridge today!  We explored the Grimms Bridge area for nearly 4 hours, visiting the guard Lock for Dam 16, Lock # 50, the remains of the Spears Mill, the little train tressel, and the Montour Train Tunnel.  We did several ghost box sessions and one EVP session.   Mike got his name mentioned, as did Autum,  but we also heard the name Hank.  Using his cell  phone and a cool application on it for ghost hunting,  Will was able to pick up the name Dick as well as several other words.
An amazing young man named Alan and his outstanding family, Teresa (his mom) and his sister,  Makayla (and several of their friends!!!) came also and had a way cool adventure.  Alan is a huge ghost hunting fan and has some great equipment!  While I hear Alan is autistic, I saw no evidence of that today!!  He is a great ghost hunter!
We followed trails that were blocked by fallen trees, briars, and deep, thick mud, but we conquered it all.  Our EVP included "Go back to the truck."  When we asked "Are you married?" we got the reply "I've been around."
Some reviewing needs to be done for all EVP and Ghost Box sessions, but we heard enough to know we were not alone.  The area needs a lot more work.  It is definitely worth your time if you are a ghost hunter looking for a new place to go.

The Grimms Bridge Area Walk is today at 4pm.  Everything looks good for that one!  We will be visiting two locks, one little train tressle, one strange wall in the woods, one old grist mill, and one SPOOKY TUNNEL!!
We will also be doing several EVP sessions, a ghost box session or two, and taking lots of pictures.  As usual, there is no charge.  We will be making some video on this one and putting it on YouTube as well!  If you're feeling like an adventure, come to Grimms Bridge at 4pm today and join us!

Jake's Lock Walk Cancelled for Today.

I have no choice but to cancel the walk for today.  I hate to do it, but it keeps raining and since our path leads along the creek, I just don't think it will be safe.  We will reschedule this walk as soon as possible.
Sorry for the inconvenience.  Perhaps tomorrow we will have better luck with the Grimms Bridge walk.
:(

Jakes Lock Tour Is Still On So Far.........

While it is cold, it is not raining.  We are going down to check the status of Beaver Creek also.  If it is too high, we may have to cancel.   Part of the path we walk on back to Jakes Lock (#39)  follows the creek.  We may have no choice.  Please check back later this afternoon.  I will have it posted by 3pm if it needs to be canceled.

Dave went to Thompson Park earlier this week and took some pictures on the trail in the woods.  These two pictures both have orbs in them. I like daytime orbs because it is harder to get them in the day.  If enough people show up, we will be splitting up into three groups. One for the circle, one for the woods and one for the big rock/pool area.
We have a lot going on with the park this year.  Besides the monthly Ghost Walk, we have the GHOST HUNTER'S SHOW  on July 24.  We are also have a HAUNTED WALK DURING OCTOBER WITH PEOPLE IN COSTUME, IN THE WOODS.   That is still in the planning stages, but looks good so far.
Any questions, email me.  April 24 is the Thompson Park Ghost Walk, and we would love to see you there!

I thought this was the train station, but I found out it isn't.  It has always been The Company Store though.  Built in about 1864, it was originally a store for the Coal Company in Negley. (Nope, I don't know the name of the Coal Company at this time, but I will).

It has been owned by Linda  Kowalczyk Oliastro for the last 25 years.   I loved the place because it is packed with antiques.  PACKED!!!

The building hasn't changed much over the years.  The glass in the windows is original.  The floor in one of the rooms still holds the knots from the timber used to make it.  When you walk inside it is like walking back in time.  I fell in love with the place!  Not to mention seeing several items I hope to buy  at some point in the future.

There is an eagle in a glass case inside on the right.  She said it is stuffed with straw, among other things, and that is why they are allowed to keep it.  The taxidermist for is was over 100 years ago.
But the most interesting thing to me was upstairs.  She has a wall that she hasn't fixe, covered, painted or renovated because it hold the signatures of people who have been through the building.  There are dates, like March 7, 1891 and June 6, 1896 hand written on this wall.  There are also many others.
Linda was very sweet to show me around and let me this little bit of preserved history.  Visiting this little buisness is very worth a moment of your time.  If the history does not draw you there, the antiques should!  Please see their web site:

Achor Cemetery After Dark

Amber and I went to visit my mom at Covington for a while tonight.  She is doing well, and might get to come home soon.  :)  On our way home, we stopped at a little cemetery Dave found a few months ago called Achor Cemetery.  Old.  Lots of interesting head stones.  A wonderful old church that is no longer used.  Out in the middle of nowhere.  And seemingly, very haunted.
We have done a few EVP sessions there, as well as two ghost box sessions.  We got an eerie sentence using the box that says "You are hunting us."
In the first picture if you look to the left , you will see two stones near the far corner of the church.  Between them is a ghost.  The second picture shows what that area looks like with out the ghost in it.  It is, seemingly, a cloaked figure peering at us from between the stones.  NICE!
The last picture is of a bright,  moving orb by the church.   We were very respectful.  We said please and thank you.  We asked.  We did not demand.  It was great.  We are eager to continue our investigation of this little cemetery and look for some history about it.  Our next goal will be to get Amy out there and see what she senses.
Tomorrow I will put another story on here about Achor Cemetery and what it looks like during the day.
If you like old cemeteries, this one is a great place to explore.

Busy-Busy-Busy Weekend!!!

It was a great weekend for Ghosting 12 Paranormal. Besides all the cool places we are discovering on our journeys to East Palestine, we had a house investigation in Salem Ohio on Saturday night and our hiking adventure on Sunday.  Both were great events.  The house yeilded many interesting aspects.  The most intriguing was the basement where there is a room with a door that locks from the outside.  Inside the room is a cott.  The owner bought it that way.  We got two interesting EVP- 1. Tell them to leave.  and 2.  Keep the door closed! (down in the basement, by the infamous room.)  We spent 5 hours there and had an amazing time.  It was a first time house investigation for new crew member Will.  He did a great job and we look forward to working with him.
Today we spent at Frankfort Springs.  That place is always interesting.  We did another ghost box session in the cottage there and one of our guests, Nettie, had her name spoken.  That is always disconcerting when you hear your name said by a ghost.
Don't forget, Saturday, April 17 is the walk back to Jake's Lock (#39) and April 18 is the Grimms Bridge tour.  Hope to see you there!

We are headed back to Frankfort Springs on Sunday, weather permitting.  You are welcome to come along.  We are meeting at Dollar General at around 12:30pm in Calcutta.  Bring a camera and wear some good shoes!  Any one that is interested, we will be doing some Ghost Box Sessions and EVP sessions, too.
As usual, it is free!
Next weekend is packed for us.  April 17 is the Jakes Lock tour, which is at Beaver Creek State Park at about 4 pm.   We are walking back to Grey's, Vondergreens, Lock #39(Jake's Lock) and Lock #40, as well at taking a look at 5 foundations of homes or businesses that existed back in the 1800's.  You will need a camera for this one, too.   April 18 is the Grimms Bridge tour.  Bring a camera, sturdy shoes, etc.  Again, 4pm.
My crew and I are, as always, looking for ghosts, but we throw in as much history as we can dig up.  Unless specified, all of our events are free.  When we charge, it is ALWAYS for a charity of some kind.  (We have only done that once so far, but we are very interested in finding other charities out there that would like to try it for a fund raiser!  We don't charge anyone for that either.)  Any questions or want to let me know you are coming?  Email me!  ghosting12@yahoo.com

Another surprise on  Carmel Achor Road was this one lane bridge, built in 1882 by the Columbia Bridge Works out of Dayton, Ohio.  The design is very attractive and reminds me of bubbles.  I do not know if it has a name.  For now, I will refer to it as Carmel Achor Road Bridge.  Haunted? Don't know.  Ghost stories?  Still don't know.  A lasting part of Columbiana County history?  You bet!  If you like bridges, this one is worth your time to visit.
Also, Carmel Achor Road is named from a town that, like Sprucevale and Cannons Mills, died many years ago.  It is on a map my crew member, Dave, found.  There is Rogersville(which is now Rogers), Millrock, Hartville(which is now Negley) and Achor.  The map is dated 1854.  I guess that also explains Achor Cemetery, which is also on Carmel Achor Road, and is tomorrows story.

There are a lot of interesting things to see on the way to Covington Nursing Home near East Palestine.  My mom has to stay there for a few weeks because she recently broke her hip.  I go and visit her every day so I have been stopping to look at some of the things that interest me.  This is actually an Amber-Find.  She took me up Carmel Apple Road to show me the remains of this bridge.  I was intrigued.
It is very old.  Made of cut stone, you can tell the road once went this way.  It is surrounded by steep hills.  It almost looks like an animal den from a zoo or something at first glance.  Once again, I am looking for any info on it that anyone knows.  if you are aware of any history for it, please email me!  ghosting12@yahoo.com

I have a couple more stories coming from Carmel Achor Road in the next few days.  A bridge build in 1882, and an old cemetery with a spooky old church are also on my list just from that road. Also, do you wonder why Achor is spelled this way instead of acre?  I have the answer for that in tomorrow's story.

I have been on Rt 170 many times, but I never noticed this building before.  It sits beside the Turkana Golf Course.  I thought  by it's shape it was either a grange hall or a school.  Looks like a school inside.  I am working on finding more information about it.  What a fantastic find!  I had no idea anything like this was around the Calcutta area.  If anyone out there knows anything about it, please let me know!

Three New Videos for Ghosting 12 Paranormal

There are three new videos about ghost hunting in this area.  The first is about a park in PA called Frankfort Mineral Springs.
A Ghost Box Session At Frankfort MIneral Springs

The next is about Ghosting 12 Paranormal and introduces you to our full team.
Meet Ghosting 12 Paranormal Part 2

The third is the second part to Grimms Bridge.
The Haunted Area Known As Grimms Bridge Part 2

On April 11, weather permitting, we are headed back to Frankfort Springs to investigate the area further.  If you are interested, we will meet at Dollar General in Calcutta at about 1pm.  If it is raining, we will not go.
Email me if you are interested in going.  We should be about two to three hours, estimated.

On June 26 the Dustin Huffman Memorial Ovelook Dedicatioin Ceremony will be held at Gretchen's Lock.  This is the sign that will be placed at the overlook above the park.  It will be placed near the location where Dustin fell 100 feet to his death on June 30, 2009.  He was only 17 years old.  Please try to attend this event.  Ghosting 12 Paranormal will be there.  They are raising money for the Dustin Huffman Memorial Scholarship Fund also.  There will be blue grass bands there and other interesting events.

We took advantage of the beautiful weather we have been having and went to Gretchen's Lock for a picnic.  The area has taken a beating so far this year.  Lock # 42 is in worse shape than I have ever seen it.  A few more years and you won't be able to tell it was a lock.  If the story is true that Jake protects his Lock, than this one isn't his.  But then, I believe Jake's Lock is #39 so this makes sense to me.
There is a huge pile of logs and other debree in front of the bridge.  That came from the heavy rains we had last week of course.  There are downed tree branches from the record snow fall we experienced  as well.
My crew and I are camping here this summer, though we have not determined a date yet.  I love this park.  I could and have spent many hours down here exploring the area looking for ghosts.  Now is a good time to go down so you can see the lay of the land, so to speak.  You can make out the stone wall above the rest rooms, see the remnants of a house near the site of the old house, see where parts of the original Grist Mill once stood, and get a good idea of how large lock #42 really was.  If history interests you, April is an excellent time to explore Gretchen's Lock.

Another note about the Old County Home being Demolished

Stevie Halverstadt, a huge supporter of our county's history, is fighting to somehow save the Old County Home, which county commissioners are planning on having demolished.  The first building was built in 1845.  It still stands today.  It housed the poor, the old and infirm, and even the insane over a span of 130 years.  It is one of my favorite buildings in this county.  I greatly admire and respect Stevie's efforts and offer my assistance in any way.  In fact, I have an idea.......

This is Frankfort Presbyterian Church Cemetery.  It is fairly small, and old.  I greatly enjoyed walking through it and reading some of the stones.  It has one of the largest open book monuments  in the area and a nice closed book monument, too.  The three little graves represent little children.  The stones are weathered and hard to read, as most are made of sandstone in this graveyard.

We also stopped at Kings Creek Cemetery.  There was a fire that burned a lot of the old dead trees around the stones a few months ago.  While this cemetery is also very old, some of the stones are in quite good condition.   Kings Creek is cold, and quiet.  Too quiet.  It is hard to stay there for long because you feel like some one is near you and very angry that you are there.  We have done several EVP sessions and gotten nothing here.  Not even a "Get Out."   By far, it is one of the creepiest and most  unsettling graveyards we have been to, day and worse, at night.
In both of these cemteries you also feel like you have gone back in history as you walk through the rows of stones.  Stones that are sometimes as individual as the people they represent.

Some Pics From Crew Member Sarah From 3-27 Thompson Park Ghost Walk

My crew member, Sarah, took these pictures March 27 at our Ghost Walk.  Sarah is 15 and is a sophmore.  She has been on my crew for over a year now.  Nice pics Sarah!

Frankfort Springs Park

Another place my crew and I visited is Frankfort Mineral Springs Park, in PA. My crew member, Dave, has been talking about this area for almost a year.  I had no idea how beautiful this place was, even from the pics he sent me.   Built in the early 1800's, it was a resort for the wealthy who came to drink it's healing waters.

Here is the  History Of Frankfort Mineral Springs . All of the original buildings are gone now.  One cottage was rebuilt in about 1970 and can be explored today.  We are going back on April 11, weather permitting.   If you are interested in going, let me know. So far, no ghost stories, but we have only just started our investigation into this area!

Amber, Brooke, and I visited the old Newell Park and were surprised to discover so much still remaining.  I was excited to find the flower garden which I think is even more beautiful than when it was first built.  And there is more, though I am still researching the park and it's history.  This picture is from the early 1900's.

They are rebuilding the park and it is called Laurel Hollow Park now.  It  looks great.  I am looking for stories about it, history, and any ghost stories I can find about it!!  If you know any please send them along!
This is how the flower garden looks today.  This park is worth the time to explore.

The Old County Home opened in 1845.  For the 130 years it was open it served the community as a Hospital, nursing home, and a mental ward.  It was used mostly for the poor.  A little cemetery across the street from it is evidence of that.  There are very few grave markers, but a lot of graves.  These buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Homes.  Of course, no one took care of them and now they are too far gone to save.  I have seen them inside and out and they are dangerous.  It saddens me because to a ghost hunter like me, they are far too attractive to tear down.  A few years ago I tried to get permission to go in, but was denied due to insurance reasons.  My mom and I walked around them once and looked in some of the doors.  That is how I know there is nothing left to salvage.  Still, I wish they could be saved.  At some point it will be added to the list of historical places torn down, like Smith Auto Parts Store in East Liverpool soon will be.  Bummer:(

We had a good night last night, and a little success in our ghost hunting.  We used the Ghost Box, with some of the best answers coming from Pavilion #1.  Dave asked if the spirits liked any one there and the answer from the box said "9 of them."  There was nine of us  around the box at the time.

It was cold, but the pictures were good and everyone had a good time.

We also go some nice EVP at the time capsule and Pavilion # 1.

Our next ghost walk at Thompson Park is April 24.  If you can, please try to come.  We will be going down to the Big Rock and Pool House area for some exploration and investigation of that area.  If you were there last night and have any good pics, please send them to me and I will put them on the blog and Amy Hissom will put them on the Thompson Park website also.

The Wall Of Mystery

About three years ago, while looking for an easier way to get to the Montour Train Tunnel, we discovered a stone wall in the woods down in the Grimms Bridge area.  All the years I have been going down there and I never knew it was there.  It is about two hundred feet long.  What is left of it is about three feet high.

I don't know at this time what might have been here, though I do have some theories.  On the ridge line above the wall lays the long forgotten Montour Rail Road Line. Perhaps it was a wall built and used by the rail road for some reason.  It could also have been a business, but if it was, it was far too large to have been simply forgotten and not talked about.  It could have been someone's farm or property.  Perhaps there was a small village here, and this wall marked it's boundaries.  There is nothing on any maps to indicate there was ever a town down here, but anything is possible.  Very obviously, there was some kind of settlement in this area.  There is too much here that has left it's mark on the area.

Now is the best time to see it, and you can clearly make it out from the road.  It is very near Lock # 51.  If anyone knows what it was, or why it is there, please let me know.

Investigating The Grimms Bridge Area

On Friday, March 19,   I took a small crew down to Grimms Bridge and we had a look around.  We concentrated our efforts around Lock # 50 and #51.  My crew was Holly, Becky, Lisa, and Brooke.  It was a great ghost hunting evening!

This is Becky standing beside some of the cut stones used to make Lock #51.  As you can see they are very large.  While there is a lot of damage and degrading going on in these locks, it also allows you to see what they are made of.  For me, it left me wondering how they moved these stones and positioned them the way they did.

Holly, Lisa, and Brooke make their way carefully around some of the trees and rocks along the bank of Beaver Creek.  We used a ghost box in this area and got some WOW results.  When I asked what color Holly's coat was, the ghost box started playing a song about a womans lip stick.  Later when we were in Lock #52, the ghost box started playing a song by Sting called "I'll Be Watching You."  Creepy.

Later, we climbed to the top of the little train bridge in that area and again used the ghost box.   One question asked was if any spirits in the area ever rode the train.  We got a very clear YES.    We also saw formless shadows moving around us, some black, some a beige color.  All of us saw something as we stood up there.  Lisa also smelled cherry pipe tobacco very strongly.    We are excited to get back down there  and do some more work!

Lock #52 Mysteries

Lock #52, at Grimms Bridge, sits on private property, though the owner didn't mind that we had a look.  Full of water now, it adds to the beauty of this scene.  Shaped differently than other locks I have seen, it has moss covered  steps on the creek side, and when Dave and I were climbing them, we both made the remark that it  was like walking up an Aztec Temple.  Some other neighbors we talked to, The Schmidbauers, told us a few things about the area, including legend about a Blue Lady in the area.  There were not any details to the story, only that a woman had died somehow in the area and now her ghost sometimes appears, casting a blue light. Sounds similiar to the Thompson Park Blue Lady Legend.  I am eager to find out more details. Who was she?   How did she die?  Why is she called The Blue Lady?
I have read that there is an old bridge abuttment in the area. The odd shape of this lock leads me to wonder if it doubled as a bridge?  If any one knows anything about it, please let me know.

If you and your crew are having any public events, I would love to put them on my blog!  Ghost walks or tours anywhere?  Let me know and I will put them on here.  It will be listed on the side under "Other Ghost Hunting Events In The Area".  Just include the date, time, meeting place, and event name.  I would suggest at least two weeks in advance.  If it has to be canceled for some reason, please let me know.

Who'd Have Thought: A Lost Mill At Grimms Bridge

Dave and I spent 4 hours down in the Grimms Bridge area yesterday.  We went to take some pics of the locks, tunnel, and bridge.  Hearing about a third lock in that area, we ended up looking for it.  We not only found it (tomorrows story) but also this foundation of what the locals call The Grinding Mill.  Not much remains, but that beautiful arch has withstood the test of time.  I was mezmorized!!!
We found so much down there at Grimms Bridge, we will be having a tour of that area on April 18.  It will start at 4pm.   I am excited about this tour.  It has to be done before the leaves, weeds, and flowers start growning in the woods. The remnants of towns, locks, and railroads will be easier to see that way.   We will meet down by the little train bridge and the tour will commence from there.
Any questions?  Email me.  I will be posting a few more stories this week about our finds in this little known area of Beaver Creek.

Expect Shirts In About 2 Weeks!

Tee Shirts are ordered.  They will be done within two weeks.  I will let you know when they are in.  They should be ready by the next Ghost Walk at Thompson Park!  Thank you all for your interest in Ghosting 12 Paranormal.  This year is going to be a busy one.  Tours are adding pretty quickly.  Coming to the list on the left will be tours to Bowman's Cemetery, Spring Grove Cemetery(charity events), and Grimms Bridge.  Dates for these events will be added soon.

History In A Pasture-More Lost History of Columbiana County

There is nothing I like better than discovering old  buildings  like these.  Interestingly, both of these can be found in  pasture fields.  The first one, with the beautiful overhang above the door, is found outside of Hanoverton on a back road.  The second is in Dungannon, on Gavers Road.  I am fairly certain the Dungannon building was a school.  A nice family across the street from it informed me the building was over 100 years old.  It was eventually converted into apartments, but that was long ago too.  The other building,  I have no idea what it was originally.  Either a church or a school.  Both are eye magnets, at least for me.  At one time they may well have been the center of a settlement from long ago.   Now they are part of Columbiana County's lost history.  If you know anything about either of these buildings, please let me know.

UPDATE

I will be ordering our new shirts on March 15.  I would prefer to have payment for them up front, if possible.  They are $6 each, unless you have a 2x or above.  The price is a little higher for those.  If you have already ordered, I will be making arrangements with you to get the money for them.
On April 11, Ghosting 12 is headed for Frankfort Springs in PA.  As you can see the scenery is very lovely, and there is also a few hauntings going on in these areas.  If you are interested in going, please email me and we can make arrangements on a place to meet.  This will be weather permitting of course.
There is not going to be a Moundsville trip.  Half my crew has the money and the other half does not.  I don't want to go without all of them, but I can't afford to pay for everyone either.  For now, at least, Moundsville is on the back burner.
I have put our schedule of events on the side.  Please check it out and see what you can attend.  There are other events that will be going on the list as soon as arrangements are finalized for them.  That would include several ghost tours of Salem, Ohio,  possibly starting in August.
Our next event is Thompson Park on March 27.  Thompson Park has several events this year.  Besides the normal Ghost Walk there, we have the Ghost Hunters Show on July 24.  That is open to the public.  Set up is free.  If you have any adventures in ghost hunting in the tri state area and would like to share them, please consider setting up a table at this event.  We are also doing a haunted woods event for Halloween this year that will run every Friday in October.  This is a scare event, complete with costumed volunteers.
There are several tentative Ghost Tours scheduled for Gretchen's Lock starting in May.  I am working on getting permission for these and other possible events located in that area as well.
We are still hoping to get into Wellsville this year also, but no new developements on that yet.  If you have any suggestions for tours or ghost hunting events for Columbiana County, or if you know where one will be held that isn't by Ghosting 12 (we'd love to go!!!) please email me the information and I will put it on the blog.

Look Over Your Old Pictures Once In A While

These pictures I took in 2006 down at Gretchen's Lock.  In the larger picture  you can see the form of the the woman on the right, seemingly leaning against the house and looking toward the camers.  She has on a long dress and her hair is up in a bun on her head.  I don't know who she is but I didn't find her in the picture until last summer.  The smaller picture is of the porch on the house later in the year of 2006.  Check your pics from time to time because you never know what might develope in them.

Snow Makes It Rough For Ghost Hunting

Snow is one of the worst weather conditions for Ghost Hunting, especially outside.  There is nothing worse for pictures, even rain.  It is quieter and great for EVP sessions, but often it is so cold you can't stay out long.
We have a ghost walk scheduled at Thompson Park on Feb 27 at 7pm, but if the snow keeps up we will have to cancel.  I hope that is not the case, but it will be announced by noon tomorrow.  I am so ready for spring!!!

Another Pic Sent In To Share. Is This Blanche Williams?

This is the original picture.  The large one is zoomed in on the door on the right on the porch.  It looks like someone is looking out the door.  This was forwarded to me by Tammy  of Just 2 Ghost Hunters.  It was taken by her friend from Blaze Records, Tony.

Could this be Denver or Blanche?  Tammy thinks it might be Blanche.
This picture sits inside the house.  The woman on the far right, looking away from the camera is Blanche in her younger years.    I have been out to the Williams house several times.    We have stood on the porch before and heard foot steps inside.  We also managed to get a response by knocking once for yes and twice for no.
Let me know your opinion on this picture of the ghost looking out the window.

New Shirts in March-Ghosting 12 Paranormal Society

I am ordering new shirts in March.  They will say Ghosting 12 Paranormal Society.  If you are interested, I am selling them at cost-$6 each.  For 2x and up it is a dollar per x, so if you wear a 2x it is $7, 3x will be $8 , etc.  2010 is turning out to be a huge year already.  We have several walks and tours planned as well as private investigations.  There is enough interest to have a little Society going.  I need the shirt orders by March 10.  The order will be placed after that and the shirts generally take about a week.
Email me if you are interested. ghosting12@yahoo.com     I will need the money for the shirts also by March 10.

Stories of The Crooks Building

The Crooks Furniture Store in East Liverpool, Ohio has been there for over 100 years.Established in 1880, the actual store is out of business, but the building remains, from what I understand, in very good shape. One of the stories I heard was about a man who committed suicide by hanging himself on the third or fourth floor in the 20's or 30's.   Despite many efforts, clearing the building of ALL furniture has been impossible ever since.
Recently, I was emailed another story.  Around 1900, there was a man named Mr. Hahn who was the night watchman for the building.  He was also a handyman as well.  Very friendly and concerned about the people involved with his building, he may haunt it to this day.

Working late one night, the person who emailed me said they happened to look up and there stood a man with a beard, in work clothes dating around 1920 or 30.  He just smiled, nodded his head and vanished. This person said that they never noticed any activity  until after midnight and before sunrise in that building. That's the catch. And you have to be quiet, non obtrusive.
It is one of the long standing buildings in East Liverpool, the Crooks name still plain and visible painted on the side.  It is a fine representaiton of the old East Liverpool from once upon a time when it was the pottery capital of the world.

An Invitation To Manor Lane

This is a house on Manor Lane.  We were invited to an investigation here on Sunday night.  It turned out to be one of the best investigations I have ever been on.
There were a few WOW rumors about the house and property, one of which was the possibility of a cemetery on the corner part of the property grounds years ago.
As we would find out later, there may well have been spirits visiting the new owners from what remains of the cemetery.

This is Jen.  This was her investigation and she invited several of my crew and me to join her. She hand picked everyone and couldn't have done a better job!  I believe the combination of everyone there contributed to the success we had for the evening.  And we were VERY SUCCESSFUL!!!!

Karyn brought with her an EMF detecter from her husbands tool box and it made our entire evening. As it turned out, she was able to communicate with the ghost of the house by using this device.  It would beep and light up when ever we encountered high emf, like around electric wires.  However it was also easy for the ghost to get it to do the same thing.  It worked better than the K2 meter.  She asked it to beep once for yes and twice for no.  If you ever watched Ghost Hunters, it worked a lot like their K2 when they get a ghost it light it up.  One of the most amazing things was when we would ask it to light it up 3 times, then 4, and then 5times. Every time it did exactly what we asked.

It was a great first investigation for Karyn and Brooke also.  The orange device that Brooke is holding is our temperature gage and the ghost was raising and lowering the temperature in several rooms as well.

We got to use the ghost box and the one thing that came through was two words that said "Find me."  That was said twice.  Very nicely done.
Thank you Jen for inviting us to this awesome investigation.  I hope you send me some picks from your end, hint-hint.

Thanks to Dave.....

We are on a baby watch at my house, waiting for Amber and Jon's baby to get here.  She is due on Feb 11, but could go at any time.  I have pretty much cleared my schedule for this event until the end of Feb.  Thankfully, Dave is out there looking for those things that go bump in the night.
He went down to Gretchen's a few nights ago and captured this spooky picture on the bridge.  I love orbs.

Riverview Cemetery's Mystical Orbs

Here are a few pics that Dave took at Riverview Cemetery a few day ago.  Riverveiw is an old graveyard, and possibly the largest in the county.  A stroll through it and you will meet many of the past prominent citizens of the East Liverpool area.  It does not surprise me that you can also get get some hauntingly beautiful scenes.  I am a personal beleiver in orbs and that they might possibly represent the spirits of the dead in many circumstances.  If you read my blog, that is no secret.  Even if you don't believe, you can't deny that the orbs add mystery to these dark images from an old cemetery.  Thank you Dave for your pursuit of the paranormal and courage to enter some of these places to find it.

Looking For Lock 43 At Gretchen's Lock

Researching the area is a lot of reading in dusty books or hours sitting in front of the computer surfing the web, looking for any sites with information on them about Columbiana County.
If you are interested in the Sandy And Beaver Canals that remain today, the best place to look for information on them is:
http://www.sandybeaver.com/
It was put on there by a man named Joe King, who went out and photographed all the locks left in the system.  Some he had to access from canoe as there is no other way to get there.  Mr. King also took the time to put some other little tid bits of history on there, like about a town called Martinsburg, which he may have found.  The pics he took are great and I look forward to finding these ruins  myself at some point this year.

Dave, Karyn (on her first case as an official member of Ghosting 12 Paranormal) and I  went on Monday, Jan 18,  to look for what I thought was Lock #43.  Lock #42, which is Hambleton's Lock or more popularly known as Jake's Lock is right there in the park.  If you take the path beside the Grist Mill and keep to the creek, you eventually can see the lock pictured above.  It is very hard to get to other than by canoe or possibly crossing the creek once it goes down later this year.  I thought it was lock #43 but thanks to Mr. King's site, discovered it is Lock #44.  So where is Lock #43?  It was used to make the  abuttments for the bridge you cross to get to Gretchen's Lock.   It is just another cool fact you can get from doing a little research into the area you call home.
Lock 44 is in a remote area, banked by some beautiful cliffs, pictured above, and there is no way right now to get over there. Later this year, my crew and I will be doing our best to explore that area.  Hopefully we will find the ruins of Martinsburg and find a way to make a free tour out of it.

Sometimes Legend Can Be Traced From Truth

I told a few stories about Spring Grove Cemetery last year. One was a story about a little boy named Billy Amos who died when he was 6 or 7 years old.   Here is a link to that story:

http://evpisproof.blogspot.com/2009/05/haunting-stories-of-spring-grove.html

I recieved a message on facebook from a lady  I  recently became friends with.  Here name is Paulette.  I joined a group called Memories of East Liverpool, Ohio. Here is a link to follow for that:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=207644399747

Paulette then tells me that the story of Little Billy Amos is based on a true story, a real little boy.  Here is a link for that story:
http://www.facebook.com/l/66c7c;billy-amos.gonetoosoon.org/

And today, I went to Spring Grove Cemetery and found the grave of this little boy who, it was said, played hide and seek among the graves for years after he died.  However neighbors  who lived across the street on Ashbaugh Lane believed Little Billy was just trying to find his way home.
Billy's mother, Anges, died in 1954, and his ghost has not been seen since.  Perhaps he waited for his mother  to come and get him.
When I found this story last year, I thought it was just urban legend more than anything else.  I am truly surprised to learn that it is at least in part, fact.  So much fact that I was able to find everything at the cemetery in a matter of minutes. East Liverpool History is just getting better and better.

Haunting Stories of Spring Grove Cemetery

This is the grave site of Linda and Angela Morris. It is at Spring Grove Cemetery. Please note there are three hearts on the stone. Linda was 4 months pregnant when she was murdered. Thankfully, her family had this beautiful grave stone put here. Spring Grove inductees can be hard to find. The pic to the right is of the grave site for Debbie Taylor and her two small children. Jesse was 6 and Billie Jo was 4. They were murdered by Robert Wooten, who is now in jail forever.

This is Linda Morris. She was 22 years old.

This is Angela Morris. She was 4 years old.

I found this story on a web site about Spring Grove Cemetery. The picture above is of a little boy name Billy who died when he was 6 or 7. He is supposed to be buried in Spring Grove. According to this web site Billy haunts the grave yard. It claims he had been seen darting between grave stones at night, seeming to play hide and seek. I have never heard this story before. Has any one else? The picture above was posted on the site and claimed this was him.

I know that Spring Grove Cemetery is haunted. There are those who speak during EVP sessions. Billy has no last name recorded in the story, and the records at Spring Grove were so shabbily kept that they are nearly useless. Does any one know about this story? Has any one ever seen his little ghostly form darting among the grave stones at night? Email me or leave a comment. Also, a story is coming soon about Sharon Hall, a woman who is a Find-A-Grave volunteer. I have listed a site called Genealogy Pit Stop on my favorite links to the side. Please check it out.

Two New Crew Members For Ghosting 12 Paranormal!

Crew member Dave is in the Air National Guard and is being deployed to Guam for the entire month of July.  He is also going to England for 6 weeks in Sept-Oct . Along with  Amber being side lined for a while with the new BABY coming, we decided to add a couple more people to the roster.

This is Brooke in the green shirt. She is Amber's sister. I have known her for 2 years. She has been on several investigations with my crew in 2008 and 2009.  She will be a perminent addition to our crew and we are glad to have her.(And her little dog SPUD!)

Also meet  Karyn.  I met her last year at a Thompson Park Ghost Walk.  She attends nearly everything we do and has an uncanny knack for EVP.  She has gotten some excellent voices on her recorder.  Again, she is a perminent addition to our crew and we are excited that she had decided to join us.
I will be doing articles on them individually with pictures of them at work on some of our past investigations.
Thanks ladies for joining us.  2010 is going to be amazing and we are glad you are along for the ride!

Views of Gretchen's Lock Through Dave's Eye

Dave spent some time at Gretchen's today before it started to snow.  Some of these pictures are worthy of a Christmas Card.  All it needs is a horse and sleigh.
Inside the Mill you can get some of the most beautiful pictures.  The orbs can sometimes be haunting in and of themselves.
Ghosts or not, there is always something to see at this park.  No matter the season investigating Gretchen's over the years has been an adventure and well worth my time.
Dave's photographer's eye has been sharp to capture these enchanting images.  I am glad he is on my team.
If you take any pictures from Gretchen's that are beautiful like these, please send them and I will put them on here for all to see with your name as the photographer.

Our First Ghost Walk Of 2010

Ghost hunting was cold business tonight.  We had two people show up.  Angel and Ashley came and we took them around  the circle.  We also did some work with the Ghost Box.  We may have gotten an answer with that.  Jay asked if it was okay if we were there and a loud YES came out.  I can definitely see us using this Ghost Box more.
EVP, we did three sessions, but it was too cold to listen.  Plus some of our recorders just stopped working due to the cold.  Even the cameras didn't want to cooperate.    But ghost hunting in the winter is important so you know what to expect in any weather.  Our next Ghost Hunt at Thompson Park is Feb 27.  My second Grandbaby is due on Feb 11 so I have tried to keep my calender clear two weeks before and two weeks after.  We are talking about having a ghost walk at Gretchen's Lock in Feburary, closer to the end of the month.  I will keep you informed about that.  Until then, stay warm!

DON'T FORGET THE GHOST WALK AT THOMPSON PARK TONIGHT AT 7PM!!!

OUR FIRST GHOST WALK OF 2010 IS TONIGHT AT THOMPSON PARK.  IT STARTS AT 7PM.  WE WILL HAVE A TENT UP WITH HOT CHOCOLATE BEING SERVED AND BROWNIES!
YES, IT IS COLD, BUT IT IS ALSO VERY QUIET OUT.  THAT MAKES IT SO MUCH EASIER TO HEAR EVP.  IF YOU GOT SOME NEW GHOST HUNTING EQUIPMENT FOR CHRISTMAS, THOMPSON PARK IS HAUNTED ENOUGH TO TRY IT OUT!  WE WILL HAVE A GHOST BOX OUT THERE TONIGHT!
IT WILL LAST ABOUT TWO HOURS.  HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

What the Grist Mill Looked Like Before They Fixed It!

I got these pictures from http://www.sandybeaver.com/
This is what the Grist Mill looked like before it was restored.  A lot time, money, and volunteer work went into returning it, at least on the outside, to what it was.  This was taken in the 1950's.   Please stop destroying this building. It does not need your name painted on it or the door crashed in.  If we help to protect it, it will be here 100 years from now for that generation of ghost hunters to explore.  And please check out the web site where these pictures are found.  It has some fantastic pictures in it from the 1950's of the locks along Beaver Creek plus a few more surprises.  This is the web site where I discovered Jake's Lock is referred to as Lock #39, not #42.

RESPECT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE FOR ANY GHOST HUNTER!

This is the Grist Mill at Gretchen's Lock. It is also known as Hambleton's Mill, but I call it the Grist Mill because I want to.  Every Ghost Hunter in the area knows where this is and the stories about it.
It is a popular enough area that people come from miles around to ghost hunt here.  I think that is great and as  long as they respect this area, come one, come all.  Here is my problem, however.

If you look at this door, which is on the Grist Mill, you will notice the right side is BROKEN.  Some idiot out there keeps breaking the door in.  It has been happening for over a year now.  Who could be so stupid?  This building has been here for about 200 years.  And while it was rebuilt in 1974, they used the stones from the original .

This was taken last year, and you can see where the door was crashed in, fixed and crashed in again.  They have tried to fix it with a metal bar, but as you saw above, some one is crashing that in now too.  For any one who has never been there or who doesn't know it, you can enter this building by going around to the back of it.  Here, let me show you.

This is the back of the building.   Years ago, someone bent the bars enough so that most people can squeeze right through.

This is a look from the inside at the door you can go through.  Notice that other disrespectful people have been inside and left their mark.  That is very ugly.  That is a sign of an amature ghost hunter.  A real ghost hunter, serious about it, would never do any damage to a site they were investigating.

Now, if you should get that door open, again, this is what you find.  An open floor.  If you just burst in, you are falling a fairly long distance and getting hurt. if not killed.  There are enough ghosts here with out adding yours..
Oh, and if you are just too much of a coward to walk around to the back of this building, YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS GHOST HUNTING AT ALL.

Plans So Far For 2010

There are some things already set for this year.  Thompson Park has dates scheduled through May so far.  There is also The Ghost Hunters Show set for July 24.  That is going to be, I hope, a big event.  If you hunt ghosts in a group or on your own and have pictures and adventures you would like to share, you are invited to attend.  I have included Bigfoot Hunters and UFO Enthusiasts in that.  Set up a table, show your stuff, sell T-shirts with your logo on it, what ever.  There will be three diferent tours running that day of the park: 1. around the circle  2. Down to the Big Rock and Pool area  3. Following the paths on the Back Nine.  We are also talking about having a Bigfoot walk with some instruction on some basic Bigfoot hunting tips.

There are several tours already in the works.  I am waiting on word about permission for a tour of Salem, Ohio and I am working on one for Wellsville also.  On the schedule already is a walk at Beaver Creek State Park to Lock #39, which I believe is the Real Jake's Lock.  That is on April 17.  You can expect repeats of the Lisbon and East Liverpool tours this year as well though they are not yet scheduled.

I am still working on the Moundsville event.  So far, I know for sure that we will attempt to go on an all night ghost hunting event.  This costs $60 per person.  You check in at 8pm and leave at 6am.  Tickets for this go on sale in January, and once I find out all the particulars, we will determine a date and get the necessary information to you about how to go.

If you have any ideas or suggestions on places you would like to see tours please let me know (ghosting12@yahoo.com) .    If you know of any tours out there close or any other ghost hunting event not given by me, let me know because A. I would like to go if possible and B. I will poste it on the blog and C. Dave will put it on our web site at http://www.ghosting12paranormal.com/   .

Here's to 2010 turning into an AWESOME ghost hunting year!
